There are a number of
nonprofit associations and organization who organize teams for
children living in Ben Avon as well as the Avonworth (Ben Avon, Ben
Avon Heights, Emsworth, Kilbuck and Ohio Township) and Northgate
(Bellevue and Avalon) communities. While the purpose of each
organization is unique, they generally adhere to these principles:
-
Building
fundamental athletic skills of the children.
-
Encouraging team
participation and sportsmanship.
-
Stress having fun
(some within competitive environments).
-
Prepare children
for school-based sports programs (so that they have some skill
and interest prior to going out for a team).
-
Encourage parents
to be active participants with their children, including
coaching and other activities.

The YMCA offers Soccer
(Fall and Spring), Basketball and other sports for children ages
kindergarten through 7th grade. For example, the YMCA serves
as the "in-house soccer program" where young children are encouraged
to join prior to joining a travel squad (usually not before the 3rd

located throughout the north Pittsburgh communities.
The YMCA of the North Boroughs has serviced
the Ben Avon area since 1876. Presently, it has
baseball/soccer fields, brand new workout and equipment room, a
kitchen and all purpose room. It also offers after school

The
North Boroughs YMCA (Bellevue branch) has been recently renovated,
and now includes a state-of-the-art Health and Wellness Center - a
great asset to the community. As a non-profit, their mission
is to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. They offer
scholarships and subsidies, making YMCA programs accessible to
everyone in the community from children to seniors.
